CONTEXT & OPPORTUNITY
Shintani Wado Kai Karate is a respected martial arts institution with deep historical roots.
However, its digital presence no longer reflected its evolving values or supported its growth ambitions. As the martial arts landscape shifted and younger audiences discovered karate through digital-first channels, the existing website became a barrier to discovery, credibility, and enrollment.
This created a clear product opportunity: use the website as a growth and accessibility lever, modernizing the brand without diluting its tradition.
STRATEGY & EXECUTION
We approached the website refresh as a brand-led product transformation, not a visual redesign.
- User & market research: Identified perception gaps between long-time practitioners and prospective students, particularly around accessibility, intimidation, and relevance.
- Brand and messaging strategy: Reframed the brand narrative to emphasize inclusivity, discipline, and personal growth—values that resonate across generations.
- Experience and visual system redesign: Developed a modern, respectful design system that balances tradition with approachability, applied consistently across key pages and conversion flows.
Design decisions were directly mapped to business outcomes, including discovery, trust-building, and enrollment.
OUTCOME & IMPACT
Post-launch performance indicated meaningful movement across key metrics:
- +36% increase in website engagement, including session duration and page depth.
- +22% lift in class sign-ups, signaling reduced friction in conversion.
- Stronger brand credibility and differentiation, particularly with younger and first-time practitioners.
Improved clarity for existing members, resulting in reduced administrative inquiries.
Rebranding a sports institution for the future.

TAKEAWAY
This case demonstrates how digital experience can serve as a growth engine for legacy institutions.
By aligning brand strategy, user needs, and conversion pathways, the website evolved from a static marketing asset into a scalable product that supports enrollment, accessibility, and long-term relevance.
As a designer, I focus on respecting core identity while modernizing systems in ways that unlock new audiences, measurable growth, and durable value.
